Abstract
▷ MLCCs offer high-capacitance in small sizes and are characterized by their high reliability and long lifespan. However, they are vulnerable to moisture and cracking that may result from external environmental factors. Moreover, piezoelectric effects can lead to the occurrence of noises when voltage is applied to the MLCC. In response, Samsung Electro-Mechanics has developed the MFC (Molded Frame Capacitor) in which metal frames and moldings are applied, to overcome the shortcomings of standard MLCCs.

▷ MFC Structures with metal frames prevent cracking. Usually, PCB bending from external mechanical stress induces MLCC cracking. However, when metal frames are applied, the MLCC is no longer directly impacted by the bending stress.

▷ Surrounded by moldings, the MFC reduces the piezoelectric effect of the MLCC. When an AC voltage signal is applied to a standard MLCC, the polarizations within the dielectric are moved by the electric field and generate small vibrations. These MLCC vibrations may lead to vibrations on the PCB surface, which can cause acoustic noises. The MFC’s metal frame and moldings can reduce the vibration caused by the piezoelectric effect of MLCCs, which is an appropriate solution for enhancing acoustic noises.
